On Yemitzov Five live sea-quilts – mats of greyish tissue that undulate through the shallow coastal waters, some as large as two metres square, sans eyes, ears, legs and teeth, in fact sans most of the things considered as basic essentials to life. Thirty years ago, the survey team said they were dumb animals. Now three squilts save a girl from drowning and Earth must send an expedition to investigate the claims that the beasts are sentient.
Dr Zuzana Aaron-Jones, a marine biologist, is recruited to the team. She’s befriended by the enigmatic Mooney, and together they try and prove that squilts are intelligent. If they’re right, the colonists must leave their beautiful world, so it would be easier if they were wrong.
Boodie Nantucket, the rescued girl, is sure that squilts are smart and telepathic as well. Nobody believes her - she’s just a kid.
And what about the squilts? What are their plans for Zuzana and Mooney, not to mention all of the colonists? Just how dangerous can giant sea-slugs be?
An S-F novella of first contact.
Quote from the British Fantasy Society review -
"From the synopsis it all sounds a bit familiar – the likes of Clarke, Asimov and Bradbury have been there and literally written the book many times over. But Ms Paddock is doing much more than rehashing old themes.
...once we meet the characters and the story gets going, this is a great read. No Earthly Shore is a short piece a long short story or compact novella, but it is absolutely cohesive and convincing. Her prose is smooth, stylish, sensual and occasionally beautiful. The characters are convincing and engaging. Importantly her science is spot on... the internal logic of the story is well thought out and completely believable. The sea-quilts themselves are wonderfully brought to life. There is some nice social and political subtext but we’re allowed to work it out for ourselves rather than being bludgeoned with it.
If there is a checklist of good writing Jilly Paddock ticks every box, and I’m looking forward to reading more."

I frankly don’t remember how I found out about Jilly Paddock’s novella No Earthly Shore, but I did, and I’m glad of it. Set in a far-future universe, this gentle story is that of Dr. Zuzana Aaron-Jones, Zuzu to her friends, and Boadicea Nantucket, Boodie to her friends.Boodie is a young teenager on the human-colonized world Yemitzov Five, and she claims that the squilts – masses of gray tissue that float in the local oceans – saved her from drowning. More importantly, she claims the squilts are sentient, which could force the human colonists to pack up and leave. Dr. Zuzu and a team arrive from Earth, and quickly start to investigate. While they are investigating, romance blooms.
I found this novella near perfect. There’s conflict, both between the Earth team members and internally (Zuzu doesn’t want the humans to have to pack up and leave) but no great violence. The characters are well-rounded, and although the colony bears a striking resemblance to an English seacoast village, the setting worked. I found myself at the end of the work wishing for more.

No Earthly Shore eBook Jilly Paddock Reviews
A playful up-ending of the tropes of human-alien first contact SF. The author creates aliens with a powerful mash-up of traits from various Earth species. These aliens may let humans stay on their planet because we're just so entertaining.
Jilly Paddock weaves a fantastic tale of first contact in this sharp and inspiring novella. She carefully balances great characterization with just enough detailed marine biology that isn't too heavy handed while maintaining a sense of rigor any fan of the genre should appreciate. Paddock also shows off just enough of a whimsical sense of humor along with a grand sense of wonder.
Much like Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness and Orson Scott Card's Speaker for the Dead, No Earthly Shore shows a complex sense of originality in Paddock's concept of alien sentience while also drawing the reader in by mirroring down to earth aspects of friendship, compassion, and even a spark of romance.
This was a very playful story. I wonder if it could have a sequel?
The descriptions of the communication with the aliens paint a picture.
Had a lot of fun reading this.
Sad it got over so quick!
This is a fantastic story. It is an easy read with a great storyline. My only complaint would be that it ended too soon !
There are feel-good films, and there are feel-good stories. This is one that conveys a feeling of warmth and wonder. I very much enjoyed this story of creatures that appear like mats of algae, and yet are sentient beings with a sense of humour. Read this story. It really is lovely.
What a fun, light-hearted romp through a beautifully written story.
No Earthly Shore really is worth reading! It's fast-paced, humorous and filled with vivid imagery that caters to all the senses.
Jilly has written a truly enjoyable read that should have a much larger number of reviews. She has captured my imagination and thrust me squarely into the waiting line to purchase the rest of her works. It was honestly a highly amusing read that made me wish it wouldn't end.
I especially enjoyed Zuzana's humour and that of the sea-quilts! The mix of sensual stimulation was very welcome too Jilly. Well done D
