Well written, with dialogues exactly how they should be to give enough information about characters and not to become long sheets of speech - in fact, dialogues are my favorite part of this book. The author managed to make them a tool for describing everything: the personality of the characters, the interiors and exteriors mentioned in a story, the cultural differences and customs the readers might be not familiar with.
The story begins as a typical crime story, but as it goes further, you can feel that it can't end well. Even that atmosphere of something ominous exist from the beginning of the book, its end still shocked me. The story neatly led us to it and yet it was and was not a surprise.
Fabulous read. Highly recommend.

Good who-done-it. A real pageturner. A sad, gripping tale of dyfunction, abuse, crime, and greed. Insanity ends in tragedy. An ace detective swiftly solves the puzzle.
Love this short story. I can't get enough of Shig Sato's investigating style. This novella is the first in the series and is as good as the last one.
Read this book in one evening. If anyone reads his books they will like this one. I personally thought that it was a good read
Sad rendition of poorly medically treated individual that made all family members miserable. A toxicology report points to murder when the suspected suicide is not caused by Valium. Who put the street drugs in the Valium vial resulting in the woman’s death
A woman dies in a bathroom. At first, it's considered a suicide. But after a toxicology report, it's murder. Inspector Sato, who once again has turned down a promotion, is asked to solve the case. A little twist near the end.
Nice murder mystery! This book is a prequel to the author’s Shig Sato series about a brilliant police detective in Japan. The story introduces Sato and sets the stage for the series. This is definitely a well-written, well-conceived story. The characters are strong and the descriptions are excellent. I’ve never been a big murder mystery fan, but decided to give this one a try in part because of its uniqueness – it is set in Japan. And I wasn’t disappointed. I was hooked on the mystery from the beginning and had to know what really happened to the victim. I highly recommend it.
Did I like it ?
Yup. Although, as it’s a novella it’s just not enough Shig Sato for my taste. It describes Sato’s last case before being transferred to security service for the royal household. And his beloved wife falling severly ill. It leaves enough open for another prequel. Which may or may not be necessary.
What I didn’t like ?
A novella at 136 pages is just not enough Shig Sato for my taste.
Would I recommend it ?
If you, like me, love the Shig Sato serious. Yes, definitively. I wouldn’t use it as a starter to the Sato series. Books 1 and 2 are longer and much better, for my taste. But Sato is just good.
Read it, you’re not wasting your time. 17.5 out of 20 points on my scale
